| Description: | 1927 News Serivce Photo - Babe Ruth HOF - Batting - Stamped back. The writeup from when this photo previously sold in 2016 through Robert Edward Auctions is as follows: News photo, dating from Ruth's historic 1927 season, capturing the fabled "Sultan of Swat" in a batting pose on the side lines. The stamping on the reverse reads "Babe Ruth/Exam - Jun 23 1927." Below that is a large asterisk (drawn in marker) and the number "60" written in black crayon. If this photo were taken on June 23, 1927, it captures Ruth at Fenway Park in Boston, as the Yankees defeated the Red Sox 11-4 on that date. Ruth went 1-4 in the game, but teammate Lou Gehrig hit 3 home runs in the contest, giving him twenty-one for the year and allowing him to pull within three of Ruth's league-leading total of twenty-four at the time. The photo (6.5 x 10.5 inches) has been trimmed along all four borders and displays a number of light-to-moderate creases throughout, as well as editorial outlining and shading to Ruth's face. Without respect to the trimming, the photo remains in Very Good condition overall. |
